Development of roadside stations

Abstract

Roadside stations have long existed to provide various services to travelers using long distance roads. In Africa, few roadside services are provided in a formal, organized manner. Fuel stations, which are often found in the small towns and villages along the road, frequently sell food and other items. Roadside markets also sell farm products to travelers. These are, however, often informal in nature and can prove hazardous to motorized vehicles on the road. Roadside stations should be designated as rest stops for all travelers, including truck drivers, traders and passengers. Special roadside stations and wellness centers should be established at selected locations along transport corridors to provide services to truck drivers.
