This Summary report of Origin research and innovation labs: institutional design. the contribution of an interdisciplinary research and innovation hub towards enhanced innovation levels in Africa, in line with the objectives of Agenda 2063: The Africa We Want, of the African Union, a qualitative assessment of the research and innovation landscape of Africa was conducted. The assessment was needed to inform the design and implementation of Origin research and innovation labs and to identify potential host countries. The findings indicated that global research and development were below average, but with notably improving trends. Currently, most of Africa has low levels of investment in research and development and innovation, and consequently low throughput of innovation. Origin is an interdisciplinary research and innovation hub, the purpose of which is to solve the complex problems of Africa. It will focus on ideation, product (i.e. goods and services) development, testing, commercialization and innovation management, following the innovation development value chain from idea to market.
