Report of the first conference of African ministers responsible for sustainable development and the environment

Abstract

The first session of the Conference of African Ministers responsible for Sustainable Development and the Environment (CAMSDE) was held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia from 8 to 9 March 1996. The meeting was formally opened by H.E. Dr. Teketel Forssido, Minister of Agriculture of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia. H.E. Ambassador Pascal Gayama, Assistant Secretary- General, gave an address on behalf of the Secretary-General of the Organization of African Unity (OAU). Mr. K.Y. Amoako, Executive Secretary of the Economic Commission for Africa also delivered a statement at the opening ceremony of the meeting. Since the Conference of African Ministers Responsible for Sustainable Development and Environment holds its sessions every four years, resolution 757 makes provision for a Ministerial Follow-up Committee of Fifteen which will meet every two years to monitor the implementation of the decisions of the Conference.
