Seminar on gender and water resources management in Africa: statement by Mr. Dickson Mzumara director, office in Southern Africa, Economic Commission for Africa

Abstract

This Statement delivered by Mr. Dickson Mzumara Director, Office in Southern Africa, Economic Commission for Africa at the Seminar on Gender and Water Resources Management in Africa. Mr. Mzumara, on his remarks highlighted that, the African Water Vision 2025 was presented during the Second World Water Forum in 2000 in The Hague and later on acknowledged by the African Union. The vision is one of an Africa where there is an equitable and sustainable use and management of water resources for poverty alleviation, socio-economic development, regional cooperation, and the environment. Targets have been set to achieve the vision, including the mainstreaming of gender in water resources management. Activities include the recent endorsement of the concept of Global WASH Advocates and the African Ministerial Initiative on WASH.
