The 55th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) decided that the World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD) would be held in Johannesburg, South Africa in 2002. A key feature of the summit would be a ten-year review of progress achieved in the implementation of Agenda 21 and the Rio Declaration on Environment and Development. This report has been prepared towards the second meeting of the Committee on Sustainable Development (CSD) which will take place in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia from 26 - 29 November 2001. The report is appraisals of the Implementation of Agenda 21 in Africa taking into account the various preparatory processes and consultations that have taken place in Africa towards the WSSD. The paper also outlines ECA's role in the implementation of the Regions Sustainable Development Programmes and Policy Implications for the Organisation.
