Abstract

Statement by Aklilu Hailemichael at the regional meeting of the global compact for safe, orderly and regular migration. Migration is an issue which, in recent times and for different reasons, has conquered regional and international discourses. Migration is a complex issue which involves broad political, economic, social and legal issues that must be fully appreciated and understood by both policymakers and practitioners. We note with serious concern that the protection of the human rights of migrants in the transit and destination countries remains a challenge. They are disproportionately affected by multiple forms of discrimination, intolerance, xenophobia and negative misperception.
