For the Economic Community of the Great Lakes States (CEPGL) composed of Burundi, Rwanda and Zaire, lakes Kivu and Tanganyika constitute very strategic infrastructures as far as inland waterways are concerned. One of the priority aspects of CEPGL transport policy was developed bearing in mind the above considerations. It aims at an effective organization of all the systems involved in transport operation on lakes Kivu and Tanganyika. Since the knowledge of the transport market and the current market operational system are at the basis of any decision relating to the proposed establishment of a joint enterprise for lakes Kivu and Tanganyika, MULPOC placed that item on the agenda of the seminar and has endeavored, through the present document, to provide as much information as possible to participants on the market.
