Evaluation and development of fisheries resources in North Africa

Abstract

From decades fishing has been a vector for socioeconomic development in the sub-region about 10,000 km of coastline of the North African countries have facilitated not only trade and communications among them but also the expansion of fishing activities, including the development of fishery industries and the creation of employment. The main purpose of this study is to disseminate information on the current status and evolution of the fishing stocks among countries of the sub-region. Other objectives are review the resources management systems, identify the most urgent needs facing the fishing stocks, suggest measures for their scientific management, introduce a systemic fisher’s concept and, recommend priority actions to ensure fisheries sustainability.
