Ambassador Sahlework Zewde appointed first female President of Ethiopia

Abstract

Ambassador Sahle-Work Zewde is the fourth president since the EPRDF coalition came to power and she is appointed first female President of Ethiopia. In her acceptance speech, the newly elected President made a strong appeal for peace. “Our dreams of building a great, prosperous Ethiopia cannot be achieved without peace,” she said. "during my tenure, my main focus will center on ensuring peace in the country.” For her part, the ECA Executive Secretary, Vera Songwe congratulated the new President on her appointment and thanked Ethiopia’s Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed for advancing the role of women in his government.
