This study has been undertaken by the Transport, Communications and Tourism Division of the Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) at the request of the Governments of the three countries bordering the River Congo/Zaire. The study was prepared during the months of October 1983 and March 1984 by Mr. Robert T.N'Daw, a consultant for ECA, under the direction of Mr. Tchouta Moussa. Director of the above mentioned ECA Division and Mrs. T.W. Kacperska, Chief of the Transport and Tourism Section of the Division. The consultant’s work was supervised by Mr. RaJohnson, economic affairs officer of the Division. The present report and its annexes have been approved by the Transport, Communications and Tourism Division of ECA as a document to be submitted to the Governments of the States bordering the Congo River-Zaire. The study reviews the current situation of the Basin and its current international status, analyzes the possibilities for developing and exploiting the River and its tributaries in an integrated manner and proposes, on the basis of its observations, ways of putting these possibilities into concrete action.
