The study focuses on Foreign direct investment (FDI) holds promise for accelerating structural transformation and poverty reduction in Africa. Such investment is essential in increasing the stock of domestic productive assets, generating positive spillovers and forward and backward linkages within the economy and facilitating import of new technologies and know-how. Investment regulation is a fundamental factor in attracting investment flows and may determine whether they translate into tangible and sustainable development outcomes. Unlike international trade rules, which are consolidated through a multilateral trading system governed by the World Trade Organization, the international investment regime is decentralized and characterized by a network of bilateral and multilateral investment agreements.
