Regional integration is an economic and political priority for African countries, as demonstrated by the abundance of integration programmes being adopted and implemented at continental and regional levels. Regional Economic Communities (RECs) are the cornerstone in the pursuit and realization of the aspiration of an economically integrated African continent. Although these communities have similar objectives, they continue to manifest differences in their structures and performances, including in the pace and level of achievement of their treaty goals and objectives. While some have made significant progress in key areas of integration, others have continued to struggle to achieve the goals set out in their treaties and conventions, and in meeting the milestones set out in the historic 1991 Treaty establishing the African Economic Community (Abuja Treaty).
