Given the difficulties that rail transport development encounters in Africa, African States must demonstrate a clear political will to make it participate in their continent's economic and social development. The problems posed by rail transportation in the year 2000 and beyond, call for deep reflection over the future of this transport mode as it faces increasing competition within the context of general transport and that of road transport development in particular.
