The United Nations system has been quick to become one of the main pillars of the international support to the implementation of the New Partnership for Africa's Development (NEPAD), once it emerged as the vision and action framework formulated and driven by homegrown African leadership, through the African Union (AU). Consequently, the UN role in supporting NEPAD as Africa's development framework was affirmed as urgent at all levels. Consistent with this goal, the Secretary-General's report to the Committee for Programme and Coordination of the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) focused on the UN support to NEPAD at its forty-fourth session held from 7 June to 2 July 2004 in New York.
