Abstract
Quarter of a century ago the first expert group of the United Nations began the discussion On measures for the economic development of underdeveloped areas. Since then, much has changed. Any assessment of new policies for the last quarter of the century requires a proper appreciation of the nature and extent of the change. Some of the more important landmarks of the changing world economy are summarized here in order to initiate the reflections on the new directions that developing countries might adopt for the period ahead.
