The paper attempts to trace - admittedly in an extremely sketchy fashion- the 'history' of class struggles in Tanzania since the time of independence. Class struggle is a process and its analysis should enable us to identify the direction (the trends) of movement in a society. Whether or not this paper has succeed in doing that I shall leave it to the readers to judge. Suffice to mention that I am painfully aware of a number of shortcomings of the paper. Owning to pressure of time, it has not been possible to document the hypothesis of the paper as much as I would have liked. It is hoped that the process of debate and discussion on the paper would help to remedy this shortcoming.
