The incorporation of an area in the capitalist world economy means first of all, and most importantly the integration of its production processes into the interdependent network of production processes that constitute the world market. As the capitalist world economy has expanded historically, new zones have regularly thus incorporated. The. process of incorporation may be thought of as a transformation that normally takes at least fifty years to complete. It can be measured by the restructuring successively of production processes, household structures, and political institutions. Since the physical loci of these three institutions are not normally identical., it is an analytically confusing process, but this does not make the links less real.
