This paper examining the role of transnational corporations in this northward movement and to suggest possible futuristic consequences for the region. As the African wave of independence is encountering some political and military, though not insurmountable cataracts in its movement southward, an economic octopus in the form of transnational corporations, is spreading its tentacles northward with tactical suitability and determination. This latter movement, reminiscent of the ninetieth century western imperialist spread, threatens to undermine the efforts towards economic stability and growth of the states in the southern African region to the benefit of South African monopoly capital by entrenching the existing division of labour.en
