In recent years, there has been a growing awareness of the need to coordinate world efforts in the development and promotion of appropriate technology. To this end, the Dutch Government convened a meeting of experts to study the need for, and "to explore ways and means of setting up long-term international mechanisms to improve world-wide cooperation in the vital field of appropriate technology”. The expert meeting agreed on the urgent need for the promotion of appropriate technology. This was defined as technology related to the objective of meeting basic needs in developing countries.
