Labour migration and employment planning in Lesotho: a study of Dependency

Abstract

Lesotho, like most Southern African States, serves as labour reserve for South Africa's labour demands, especially that of the mining industry. The country depends on South Africa for wage employment of a substantial proportion of its labour force. At any one time, over 50 per cent of able-bodied male adults are absent from the country working in South Africa. This unfortunate dependence situation makes Lesotho's position highly vulnerable.
