The present report is divided into three parts. The first gives an account of the organization and conduct of the workshop, the second contains the reports relating to each of the special topics discussed and the third sets out the text of the workshop’s conclusions and recommendations for action under each especial topic. The Workshop was held in response to recommendations by the Economic and Social Council, which for some years past has been concerned with the social and economic problems that accompany the growing concentration of population in urban areas and has, accordingly, adopted resolutions calling for study or action in the field of urbanization. Its purpose, which was essentially a practical one, was to identify and discuss fundamental concrete problems arising from the rapid growth of cities in Africa and the massive migration from the countryside to urban areas and to assist governments in the formulation and execution of policies and measures to solve the most urgent of these problems.
