Report of the sensitization mission to the African first ladies in some West African Countries in preparation for the first ladies summit on peace

Abstract

This report outlines the sensitization mission conducted by the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) to engage African First Ladies in West Africa in preparation for the First Ladies Summit on Peace, scheduled for May 5-7, 1997, in Abuja, Nigeria. The mission aimed to deliver invitations and discuss the importance of the summit in addressing peace-building and the consequences of conflicts in Africa. The team visited Ghana, Cote d'Ivoire, Mali, Burkina Faso, and Senegal, where they were received by various First Ladies and senior officials. Key discussions highlighted the need for action-oriented strategies to alleviate the suffering caused by conflicts, promote women's roles in decision-making, and address refugee issues. The report emphasizes the commitment of the participating countries to peace initiatives and the collaborative efforts of the First Ladies in tackling societal challenges. Overall, the mission was well-received, with several First Ladies expressing their intent to attend or send high-level delegations to the summit.
