Mission report on data and information collection on social and economic condition of West African subregional countries: with emphasis on gender

Abstract

This report summarizes the findings of a data and information collection mission conducted by the Subregional Development Centre (SRDC) of West Africa across Côte d'Ivoire, Ghana, and Nigeria in September–October 1997. The mission aimed to assess socio-economic conditions, with emphasis on gender issues, and to review strategies for gender empowerment in line with the Beijing Platform for Action. Key findings reveal persistent challenges, including economic mismanagement, deteriorating infrastructure, and widespread poverty, disproportionately affecting women. Despite efforts by governments and UN agencies, women remain largely confined to the informal sector, engaged in low-income activities like petty trading and small-scale farming, with limited access to resources. The report highlights the need for structural reforms to enhance women’s economic participation and calls for targeted interventions, such as microcredit programs and skills training, to uplift marginalized groups.
