This report summarizes a workshop on port commercialization held in Dar-es-Salaam, Tanzania, from July 16–18, 1997. Organized by the Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) in collaboration with the Port Management Association of Eastern and Southern Africa (PMAESA) and ECLAC, the workshop addressed the transition of African ports from state-controlled models to commercialized operations. Key outcomes included recommendations for the Tanzania Harbours Authority (THA) to establish a task force, consider local conditions, and prioritize privatization efforts. The workshop emphasized the need for future national workshops and ongoing collaboration between ECA and ECLAC to support port commercialization across Africa.
