Abstract
This report summarizes the proceedings of the Fifth Meeting of the Intergovernmental Committee of Experts of the Eastern Africa Subregional Development Centre (EA-SRDC), held from May 26 to 28, 1998, in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The meeting aimed to review the activities accomplished by the EA-SRDC in implementing its 1997 work programme and to discuss key issues affecting the socio-economic development of the Eastern Africa subregion. Key topics included the establishment of a Gender Advisory Committee, training in post-harvest structures, and strategies for poverty reduction in rural areas. The report highlights the importance of transport and communications as a catalyst for economic integration, the need for macroeconomic coordination among member states, and the significance of gender equity in development initiatives. Recommendations were made to enhance cooperation among member states and to prioritize gender issues in development planning.
