Abstract
United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA), in its mandate to evaluate and report progress on the implementation of global and regional Platforms for Africa on the advancement for women, embarked on the process of developing an African Gender and Development Index (AGDI). The AGDI measures country's progress in the implementation of the international conventions and charters, agreements that address gender equity and equality issues including CEDAW, African charter on human and people’s rights - the women's rights protocol, Africa charter of the rights of the child, the ICPD (Cairo 1994) and the Platform for Action drawn during the 1995 Fourth Women's World Conference in China, the ILO conventions and the Abuja declaration.
