The report stated that the commission discussed the need to speed up the implementation of the outcome document of the General Assembly’s special session on Women (GASS 2000) that contains the findings of the Beijing +5 evaluation process, including Africa’s mid-term review. Commitments to principles underlying gender equality were reaffirmed by the governments and the international community. To achieve these aims, program and budgetary processes should to be gender responsive and had been based on gender desegregated data with measurable goals and clearly defined evaluation mechanisms. During the commission session, much emphasis was put on areas thought to be critical to gender equality, namely: education, sexual and reproductive health including HIV/AIDS, violence against women and girls, and the increasing burden of poverty on women.
