At the request of the World Food Prize Foundation, the Executive Secretary nominated the Commission's Regional Adviser on Food Security and Sustainable Development to provide assistance to the Foundation in its annual laureate activities and organization of an international symposium on topical issues of relevance to the Commission's work and to Africa. The Commission's Regional Adviser on Food Security and Sustainable Development was invited to serve as a Resource Person at the World Food Prize 15th Anniversary International Symposium whose theme is "The Risk to the World Food Supply in the 21st Century”. The mission chaired the Panel Discussions on "Risks to Sustainable Development in Africa". The two main topics discussed were: What are the keys to enhanced nutrition and increased child survival in Africa? and How will HIV/ AIDS impact food production in Africa? The mission was in conformity with the approved United Nations Regular Program of Technical Cooperation for the 2000-2001 biennium which calls for the provision of advisory services on the formulation and implementation of food security policies and programs.
