The African Women's Report (AWR) is one of a select number of flagship publications of the Economic Commission for Africa that are intended to provide data for monitoring trends and changes in a specific area. The 2002 Report focus on the Challenge of Mainstreaming Gender in Governance and Decision-Making in Africa. Mainstreaming gender in national development policies is defined in an ECOSOC 1997 Resolution as "the process of assessing the implications for women and men of any planned action, including legislation, policies or programmes in any area and at all levels a strategy for making women's as well as men's concerns and experiences an integral dimension in the design, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of policies and programmes in all political, economic, and social spheres so that men and women benefit equally, and inequality is not perpetuated". The overall objective of the African Women's Report-2002 is to generate knowledge and disseminate information about the state of gender and governance in Africa.en
