On 9 August 1994, the UN Security Council Mission met with Mozambican President Joaquim Chissano, RENAMO leader Afonso Dhalkama, and Election Commission Chairman Mr. Mazula to assess progress toward implementing the General Peace Agreement (GPA). Ambassador Gambari (Nigeria), heading the mission, emphasized the urgency of completing demobilization and adhering to election timelines, urging parties to accept UN-certified results. President Chissano reaffirmed commitments to demobilization and election schedules, citing challenges in forming a new army. Dhalkama reported RENAMO’s near-complete demobilization but proposed extending voter registration. The Election Commission outlined logistical preparations, including training and polling stations, while considering a registration deadline extension.
