At the Ninth Ordinary Session of the OAU Scientific Council in Addis Ababa (August 1994), UNECA reaffirmed its commitment to supporting African nations in integrating science and technology into economic policies for sustainable development. Represented by Deputy Executive Secretary Makhan Sarr, UNECA Executive Secretary Layashi Yaker emphasized the critical role of science and technology in socio-economic progress, citing the success of newly industrialized countries in Asia and Latin America. He highlighted key takeaways from the 1993 Tokyo International Conference on African Development, which stressed technology, research, and human resource investment as pillars of growth. Yaker underscored the importance of subregional and regional cooperation, announcing upcoming UNECA initiatives, including an expert meeting on technology transfer (September 1994) and a roundtable on implementing the Abuja Treaty’s Science and Technology Protocol (November 1994).
