dc.description.abstract | This report, submitted pursuant to Security Council Resolutions 925 (1994) and 929 (1994), provides an update on the situation in Rwanda as of 1 August 1994. The Rwandan Patriotic Front (RPF) has gained military control over most of the country, leading to the collapse of the former interim government and the formation of a new broad-based government on 19 July. The conflict has triggered a catastrophic humanitarian crisis, with over 2 million refugees fleeing to neighboring countries and an estimated 500,000 killed. UNAMIR’s mandate has shifted to stabilizing security, supporting humanitarian efforts, and facilitating refugee returns. The report highlights the urgent need for international aid, justice for genocide perpetrators, and political reconciliation. The new Rwandan government must ensure security, prevent reprisals, and promote reintegration while rebuilding institutions. | en |
