A two-day workshop organized by UNIDO, OAU, and ECA examined women's participation in African manufacturing, analyzing patterns, determinants, and future trends. The study used a conceptual model to assess social, economic, political, and institutional factors influencing gender participation. Findings revealed that light industries like food and textiles dominate Africa's manufacturing sector, reflecting early industrialization. Unlike Asia, Africa has limited export-led industrialization driven by female labor, except in countries with export processing zones (EPZs) like Mauritius and Tunisia. Female participation in formal manufacturing remains low, with higher involvement in informal sectors like trade and services. The study highlights the need for gender-inclusive industrial policies to enhance women's economic roles in Africa.
