This month marks the tenth anniversary of the death Dag Hammarskjold Secretary-General of the United Nations Organization from 10 April 1953 to that fateful night of 17-18 September 1961 where he died in a plane crash near Ndola. in that is now Zambia. He was flying to Ndola from Leopoldville (Kinshasa) for talks with President Tshombe of Katanga province. The mission was one of several efforts to achieve a cease - fire in the fighting between United Nations troops and Katanga forces led by foreign mercenaries, which had broken out at about the time of he arrival in the Congo.
