The Symposium on Rural Development in Africa in the 1970s provided the occasion for-our first formal meeting. Since then, through discussion, correspondence and working together with you, or appreciation of the efforts of international voluntary agencies in rural development in Africa, has increased and deepened. well over 19,000 of the projects sponsored by voluntary agencies in Africa have been accounted for in the VAB's first issue of the Directory. Quantitatively, this is tremendous; but more importantly, it is the quality of the work of these agencies the commitment of field workers and headquarters staff which gives us hope that the gap between the industrialized nations and the poor nations need not continue to widen.
