On October 16, 1996, Secretary-General Boutros Boutros-Ghali delivered a message for World Food Day, emphasizing the urgent need for the international community to recommit to combating hunger and malnutrition. He highlighted the alarming statistic that nearly 800 million people are chronically undernourished, which he deemed unacceptable. The upcoming World Food Summit in Rome was presented as a critical opportunity for global leaders to adopt new policies and pledge resources to eradicate hunger, food insecurity, and malnutrition, goals established 22 years prior. The message called for renewed initiatives and efforts to address this global crisis, urging the world community to rededicate itself to the fight against hunger.
