Energy is a basic factor in any economic activity as well as in daily life of people. It is an essential element to meet basic human needs and to promote and enhance social and economic development. The prime purpose of this paper is to report on the present situation of energy statistics in Africa: its availability and limitations. This is mainly a desk work, as it was not possible, due to the limited time available, to undertake a survey of the countries to collect information on the situation of energy statistics in the individual countries. It was therefore necessary to use studies carried by other agencies. The main reference has been the work done by the World Bank, the International Energy Agency, The United Nations Statistics Division and in some cases, by African National Statistics Offices. An attempt is first made to give a bird's eye view on the significance of energy and its major sources. Then is provided an evaluation of the energy statistics available and the gaps in the same. This is followed with details of what must be done to bridge the identified gaps, and quality control measures to be taken. Conclusion and recommendations are drawn at the end.
