The Social Summit focused on global problems at the core of humanity's social development including: reducing and eliminating widespread poverty; achieving the goal of full employment; enhancing social integration; and, fostering stable and just societies. This paper, in turn, expands on the monitoring efforts started in the sub regional conferences; it also attempts to evaluate the progress made since 1995. The paper is organized as follows: Section II provides an overview of the main commitments enunciated in the Copenhagen Declaration on Social Development. Section III provides an assessment of the performance of African countries in implementing the Copenhagen Declaration and Programme of Action. Section IV concludes.en
