Abstract
This report makes an assessment of the available data and information on irrigation schemes, present and potential, in Botswana and has been prepared at the instance of the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa, within the framework of the project, entitled "Land and Water Resources Survey for Irrigation in Africa". This report is prepared in accordance with the terms of reference set up for the study by the ECA in their letter no. ECO 310/ 5/7 dated 20 January 1982 addressed to the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Finance and Development Planning Botswana. The study is a part of the effort of the ECA to assist the Government to achieve the target for the improvement of production over an area of 1 million ha under irrigated cereal cultivation and the development of new areas of 155,000 ha for irrigation of cereals by 1985 on the continent of Africa, in the context of the need to promote self-sufficiency by 1990 as envisaged in the Lagos Plan of Action.
