Mission report: priority water management projects and stabilization of the levels of lake Tanganyika

Abstract

Since the occurrence of the 1964 floods that caused exceptionally high lake level rises and considerable damage to port installations and commercial property the riparian States of the Tanganyika/Kivu sub-basin have been making efforts for joint action for the stabilization of the levels of the lake and the realization of integrated development programmes . To assist in this effort, the ECA was approached by member States for support. In response, the ECA secretariat through the Water Resources Unit of the Natural Resources Division has assisted in the organization of a meeting of the representatives of the riparian countries and in the preparation of project documents for the development of Tanganyika/Kivu basin.
