The livestock factor in the improvement of food security in Africa

Abstract

National and regional development programs aim to provide basic needs such as food, health, housing, education, and employment. However, Africa faces significant challenges, including war, oppression, illiteracy, mismanagement, and neglect of agriculture, leading to widespread malnutrition and food insecurity. While famine is often highlighted, chronic malnutrition is a more pervasive issue, particularly in Sub-Saharan Africa, affecting vulnerable groups like children and pregnant women. Despite the recognition of malnutrition's impact, government policies often overlook it due to its non-communicable nature and competing financial priorities. This document aims to address food security issues, particularly the role of livestock in alleviating malnutrition in Africa. It discusses the concept of food security, indicators of food insecurity, and proposes strategies to enhance the livestock sector's contribution to food security. The document is structured into five chapters, covering the concept of food security, livestock's role, strategies for improvement, and conclusions with recommendations.
