Improving the performance of public enterprises in Africa

Abstract

A Senior Policy Workshop on Improving the Performance of Public Enterprises in Africa was held at the Ethiopian Management Institute Training Center in Debrezeit, Ethiopia from November 12-16, 1990. The workshop's broad aim was to facilitate an exchange of experiences on modalities for the improvement of the performance of public enterprises in Africa. The specific objectives of the workshop were to Identify and analyze the constraints to efficient and effective management of the Public Enterprises; Examine how policies and practices of the supervisory authority impede or facilitate the performance of Public Enterprises; Analyze the option of commercialization of public enterprises; Examine the mechanisms for enhancing financial viability of public enterprises; Examine and suggest policies, measures and procedures for improving the productivity and efficiency of public enterprises; and Propose a system of performance indicators to be used for monitoring, evaluating and improving the performance of public enterprises.
