Despite the consensus that regional integration is essential to unlock Africa’s economies and improve competitiveness, and in spite of the concerted actions, Africa is still to reap the full benefits of regional integration. Why? Africa’s regional integration has not pushed the frontier that would by this time made it transformative; with the ability to bring the much needed economic growth and sustainable development, create employment and thereby reduce poverty. The main question is how to reverse the situation so that African countries can benefit from improved intra-African trade? The new initiatives such as the COMESA-EAC-SADC tripartite and the Continental Free Trade Area should be viewed as some of the solutions which would substantially expand intra-African trade by breaking down tariffs and non-tariff barriers.
