Commission on the status of women's: the 57th session "Elimination and prevention of all forms of violence against women and girls"

Abstract

The organizers are to be commended for organizing this African Preparatory Meeting for the forthcoming session of the Commission on the Status of Women scheduled to take place in New York in March. A regional meeting of this nature derives its importance from the opportunity that it provides to build consensus which in turn ensures that Africa’s views are taken on board in global processes. This is even more the case when the theme is of utmost importance for this continent. In this particular instance, the theme - Elimination and Prevention of All Forms of Violence Against Women and Girls – is of both global and regional significance. Violence against women is to be combated and condemned wherever it occurs as all over the world, women are still subject to pervasive and persistent violation of their basic human rights.
