Side Event on “Greening Africa’s economies and structural transformation” talking points. Africa is now decided on the pursuit of a structural transformation agenda, which should see the region shift towards economic development based on industry and modern services, with prospects for significant employment generation and an equitable distribution of income. At Rio+20 in June 2012 Heads of State and Government and other high-level representatives affirmed that green economies in the context of sustainable development, inter alia, take into account each country’s national circumstances, objectives, priorities and policy space with regard to the three dimensions of sustainable development. The prospects of Africa realizing the benefits that the shift to inclusive green economies offers lies in the region being strategic and ensuring that the transition is well aligned with the region’s transformation agenda.
