Résumé
This research was conducted with the aim of studying the qualitative and quantitative aspects for the wide utilization of GIS technology in Ethiopia as the backbone information infrastructure for drought management and rural development. Ways of overcoming the absence of WAN networking in the country will be presented. The benefit of geographic based information infrastructure under the now existing political and administrative system of the country (together with the macroeconomic, legal, and administrative mechanism) is sketched. The merit and usefulness of introducing the GIS as an interdisciplinary collective tool, for addressing the diverse needs and problems is reviewed. Finally, different ways for introducing GIS are given and further studies are recommended.
