A manual on guidance and counselling services for: schools/employment agencies/social and community workers

Abstract

The need for educational and vocational guidance and counseling services including occupational and psychological testing in any program of education, employment and community services is being increasingly recognized and accepted among African countries as a sound base for human resources development and utilization, As early as 1960s, African countries have made considerable progress in setting up administrative structures and programs which would provide the related guidance and counseling services. National careers guidance associations and or councils have been formed to provide guidance and counseling services on voluntary basis. However, these programs have basically served and benefited only few in secondary schools and hence the programs have not made much impact in the development and utilization of human resources. Worse still, these services and activities in guidance and counseling have severely been handicapped by lack of trained personnel, policies and effective co-ordination of activities, national machinery and hand bock of guidelines of programs for guidance and counseling services for use by school masters/mistresses, counselors, employment officers, social and community officers rendering various aspects of guidance and counseling services.
