Address by Lead Panel Member In Charge Of Zambia, Prof. Al-Amin Abu-Manga to the national technical sensitization workshop on the APRM national plan of action (NPOA). Prof. Abu-Manga, on his remarks highlighted that, Since its establishment on 9th March 2003, the African Peer Review Mechanism has grown from strength to strength, with 34 countries of the African Union coming on board, of which 17 have been peer reviewed; and Zambia being of the seventeen reviewed countries. The Mechanism has also opened up political space for citizen participation in writing Country Self-Assessment Reports and shared with them their views on APRM process. The Report identified some challenges such as the conflation between party and state, crime, corruption, domestic violence, high levels of illiteracy, looming HIV/Aids scourge, gender inequality and overdependence on foreign aid. The APR Panel believes that the Government is now addressing these challenges as well as implementing the Panel’s recommendations as stipulated in the National Programme of Action.en
