The government of Mauritius requested for technical advisory services from the Economic Commission for Africa, to advise the Ministry of Women, Family Welfare and Child Development in setting up an economic empowerment program. The specific objectives of the assistance were to increase the capacity of women entrepreneurs; to develop mechanisms through which entrepreneurs at grass roots can be promoted; to set up a structure and appropriate mechanism with a view to offering credit facilities based on the Grameen Bank, and to set up networks for joint ventures among women in Mauritius and abroad.
