The main objectives of the programme are to contribute to reducing poverty, to sustaining economic recovery, growth and development in the region and to help the countries cope with the challenges and opportunities of globalization. This programme is based on the Medium Term Plan for the Economic Commission for Africa for the period 2002-2005 and inspired by the goals set out in the section on Africa in the Declaration of the Millennium Summit of the United Nations. The mandate for the programme derives from the Economic and Social Council resolution 671A (XXV) of 29 April 1958 by which the Economic Commission for Africa was established and has been further elaborated in a number of relevant resolutions of the General Assembly, ECOSOC, and the Commission.
